Girlmonster is a series curated by Chicks on Speed taking place at Kampnagel.
Every Girlmonster show presents a lecture, a video screening, a performance and a
concert.
Girlmonster #13 is hosted by Melissa Logan (CoS) and beside the performance Gudrun
Ankele (Vienna / tutor/publicist) will give a lecture on females in the economic
system, Melissa Logan will screen a film and DAT Politics will perform a concert.
For the performance we need at least 8 performers wearing ONLY grey civilian
cloths.
Rehearsals are planned for Friday and Saturday afternoon.
Showtime is Saturday, 19/03/2011, 21.00h.
Every performer gets a care package from the Chicks on Speed as well as one free
ticket for Girlmonster #13!
About the performance:
IF NOT US, WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN? is a live sculpture, a pageant of a street
protest frozen in time and space. The performers should form a compact group and
mime a group of people protesting/demonstrating on the streets. The demonstration
should appear "frozen", the performers should hold a still pose without the
slightest move, simulating vigorous marching, screaming/chanting, lifting fists,
etc. The whole living sculpture/situation should look like a cut out, a fragment, a
live photograph of a street protest, a riot stopped in time and space. The
performers are about to move only when a passer-by throws a coin in the metal bowl
that is placed near the protesting group. Similarly to the street "living
sculptures", when paid, the demonstrants should move minimally and smoothly -
phasing a large movement (one step or lifting of a fist) into several small phases,
no jerky, large or expressive moves. The still poses should appear as frozen
movements, as being in the middle of an action, of a step, scream, etc - not as a
standing demonstration. The demonstration would manifest continuously in slow
motion, frame by frame. The performers should for the whole duration of the
performance remain silent.
The whole tableau vivant speaks about the illusoriness of subversion, about the
controlled condition of the public space and the economic relations that create
invisible ground and rules hidden behind each apparently spontaneous act.

Go Chic was invited to play at SXSW festival in Austin TX and Fuji Rock festival in Japan, 2010. Go Chic was nominated for "Best Pop Song", "Best Electro/Dance Song", "Most Mind-blowing Music Video" by AVIMA 2010(Asia Pacific VOICE Independent Music Video Awards). Won "Best Genre-Bending Act" and the "Tipped 2 Be The Next Big Thing" award by AVIMA 2010.

Biography:
Go Chic describes their music as “Electro-Hyphy-Chicks, Hybridized Punk-Blues-Rock” or “sound like Peaches, CSS, Le Tigre”. However, it is far too simple to depict them as merely an electro punk band after listening to their debut album- I am Confused. Such as my favorite track “2010”, puts together electro punk/electro-garage-rock elements that sound like the spark of when Soulwax meets Garbage. 8-Bit inspired tunes remind me of the 8-Bit Thrash craze led by Crystal Castles. Striding on the steps of Disco-Funk is “Dance With Her”, a perfect tribute to the Disco Punk spirit of DFA. Not to mention “We’re All Lovers & Runners”, where they have a sniff of 80’s New Wave, which is the “happiest” track in this album.
I am Confused, takes us through a delightful experience back in the 90’s indie scene, where vocalist Ariel raps like Princess Superstar and at the same time captivates us with a voice that wonderfully parodies Shirley Manson’s(Garbage). The amazing energy that comes out of every song reminds me of the “New Wave of New Wave” Elastica that emerged from the Pre-Britpop days and has every ability to rise as the leading Riot Girrrlz of today!!!

You are getting a look at the first wireless High heeled shoe guitar, made in collaboration with Siberian born shoe designer Max Kibardin and Hangar.org. The shoes will be unveiled alongside Chicks on Speed's collection of self made 'Objekt Instruments"- Cigar Box Synthesizers, super suits' with sewn-in body sensors that trigger audio/video samples, 2 hats made in collaboration with Christophe Coppins and Hangar.org, based on illuminated drawings of Hildegard von Bingen, a 12th century Christian mystic who received visions, composed ethereal airs, performed healing and even founded covents. The hats transmit the utterances of their wearers by way of microphones and speakers: the contemporary beatified woman can amass her own power tools, or so it seems.

* 1972 in Jugoslawien; M.A. der Kunstakademie Belgrad, 1998, und der École Regionale des Beaux-Arts, Nantes (F). Ostojić ist eine Nomadin, die in Europa als unabhängige und interdisziplinäre Performance-Künstlerin lebt. 2001 beschloss der dänische Künstler Claus Beck-Nielsen, seine Identität aufzugeben. Beck-Nielsen verbrannte seinen Pass, kündigte alle offiziellen Verbindungen auf, verließ seine Familie, und lebt seitdem ohne Namen: Freunde sprechen ihn mit "Du" oder "Sie" oder "Direktor" an.
Was als radikaler Versuch eines Künstlers begann, ein selbst-bestimmtes Dasein zu führen, entfachte eine breite politische Debatte in Dänemark über das Verhältnis von Staat und Individuum - und brachte der Performance-Gruppe des "Direktors" DAS BECKWERK weltweite Einladungen zu Theater- und Kunst-Festivals ein. In der Arbeit CLAUS BECK-NIELSEN MEMORIAL NIGHT berichtet der Direktor über den langen Abschied von der eigenen Identität und sein eigenes Leben seitdem.
Der Frage, in wieweit Kunst und Leben ineinander greifen können, sind DAS BECKWERK auch in ihren weiteren Arbeiten nach gegangen. Für THE HISTORY OF THE DEMOCRACY & THE LANGUAGE OF HOPE ist der Direktor in Länder wie den Irak oder Afganistan gefahren, die im Krisenfokus der Weltöffentlichkeit stehen, um dort entweder die Demokratie oder eine bessere Revolution zu versuchen. Die Arbeit beginnt mit Barack Obamas Erklärung zur US-Präsidentschaft, auf Kampnagel gespielt vom deutschen Über-Schauspieler Jens Harzer.
Und gleich die ganze abendländischen Entwürfe zum idealen Menschen der abendländischen Geistesgeschichte verarbeitet DAS BECKWERK in THE POST HUMAN, einer Ein Mann-Oper mit Techno-Musikern auf der Bühne.
Wir präsentieren DAS BECKWERK als eine der radikalsten und konsequentesten Kunst-Performancegruppen in einer einmaligen Werkschau mit Ausstellung auf Kampnagel vom 23. - 28. Februar 2010.

Ivorian music has really for the first time taken over dancefloors all over Africa and some of Europe as well. At the same time Ivory Coast has been going through protracted political and military crisis, with debilitating social and economic effects.

Coupé-décalé appears around 2002 in a trendy African nightclub in the northeast of Paris. It was created by a couple of young immigrants from Ivory Coast, like Molaré, Bobo Sangui, Lino Versace, Solo Béton, Douk Saga.

Couper in Ivorian slang means to cheat somebody, décaler is to run away. The third word which comes all the time in the first songs of coupé-décalé – we are here to work. And travailler means distribute the money, throw the money away, share it with other people on the dance floor.
The beginning of this music was quite improvisational, it was a public show of improvisation, of dance movements but also of a new kind of music. The influence is quite Congolese at the beginning, but there is also an influence of zouglou music and earlier Ivorian music.

Only some months later after the first songs in Paris the same people went back to Abidjan’s nightclubs Ivory Coast and made themselves known by distributing money. It was also the beginning of the Ivorian crisis when civil war split the country between rebel-held north and government-controlled south, so there was quite a need for some distraction from images of war. Although the fighting has stopped under a 2003 peace deal, Ivory Coast is still tense and divided.

At the very beginning there was no political message at all. First of all coupé-décalé is music to dance to, to forget what is surrounding you. There are hundreds of different coupé-decalé artists and songs and dance moves and almost every song proclaims to be a substyle.

Coupé-Décalé is a quest for new values, there is a general quest that you can find in many songs for a common future like “On est ou là?” Where are we actually? What’s happening? Where are we? Coupé-décalé grabs things from all sides and current events, like 2006 it was Guantanamo: every time somebody shouts “guantanamo” you have to put your hands together like if they were tied.
The music shot to success during the political crisis that followed the attempted coup d’etat in 2002; the subsequent night-time curfew inadvertently spawned a musical movement for those locked inside the clubs until sunrise. Everything is possible in this world of coupé-décalé, and it’s possible in a very short time.

Angola has the largest number of landmines in the world after Afghanistan. Nearly half of the land in Angola is considered too dangerous to walk on. Hundreds have been killed and perhaps as many as 80.000 injured with a serious disability.

Here you can see some Angolan landmine survivors dancing kuduro, awesome moves! Angola was in civil war from the 1970’s to 2002 and it was one of the largest and longest armed conflicts of the Cold War. Angola has mines made in Russia, United States, South Africa, and Italy among other countries. There are many interests on Angola as it is the 2nd biggest oil producer in Sub-Saharan Africa after Nigeria and it is the 4th biggest diamond source in the world.

Baile Funk from the ghettos of Brazil, Coupé Décale from Cote D´Ivoire / Paris, Kudoro from Angola, Bhangra from India and Kwaito from South Africa, are all gaining worldwide recognition due mainly to the Internet changing how we consume music.
We at CLIMAXXX feel it's about time we thought of a name for this style, as I said here, World Music just doesn't cut it. So, ladies and gentlemen, from now on, when someone asks what styles we play, we will be delighted to add......Po-Co House to the list (that's Post Colonial House to the lay person)

Fausts Höllentripmeister Eder
Für die einen ist die Performance Truppe HGich.T sinnfreier Untergang der Hochkultur und für die anderen der lang- und heißersehnte Befreiungsschlag vom Performance-Elitarismus. Versuch einer Erklärung.

Es ist keine Frage, HGich.T scheiden die Geister: Lärmend-nerviger Abgesang des Abendlandes oder aber unterhaltsame Theaterverweigerung mit analytischer Gegenwartskritik mit Neo-Faust´schem Ausmaß.
Tasten wir uns an das Phänomen HGich.T zunächst mit einer Beschreibung: Das Bühnenbild ist ein Goa-Wunderland von beinahe Meese´schem Ausmaß - mit deutlich geringerem Budget, versteht sich. Neon-Fäden spinnen Netze der Verwirrung, Pilzbilder, eine Staffelei, Leinwände, Neonfarbe in Tuben, eine Pyramide, ebenfalls mit Wollfäden bespannt. Alles leuchtet im Schwarzlicht. Ein Dixie-Klo steht in der Ecke. Erste Nebelschwaden. Hier wird eine Party zum Theaterhappening. Auftritt Samson, eine Mischung aus Druide und Elfe schleicht auf die Bühne. Er versteckt sich hinter seiner Laptop-Barrikade und drückt auf Play. Das wird er im Verlauf der Performance noch öfter tun, denn Samson ist der Rhythmus-Mann, der Pulsgeber des Ganzen. Jetzt betritt ein Mönch die Bühne/Party. Er spielt Harfen-Playback auf einem Wäscheständer. Der Haufen auf der Bühne entpuppt sich als Tutenchamun: Jenes Alter Ego, mit Vogelnestfrisur und Bauarbeiterweste, der im Tanzrausch dem Dasein ein bisschen Spaß abzutrotzen versucht - oder zumindest ein bisschen Rausch. Fans wissen Bescheid, Neu-Zuschauer erstmal nicht. Die Beats setzen ein und Tutenchamun vollführt einen Jugend-Abschiedstanz. Beinahe zeitgleich taucht Anna-Laura auf: der zunächst unscheinbare Protagonist des gesamten Wahnsinns, der da nun auf einen zurollt. Schnell wird klar: wir befinden uns in seinem Kopf, die anderen Performer sind Teile seiner Erinnerungsschnipsel, die der konsequente Drogenmissbrauch noch nicht aus seinem Hirn gelöscht hat. Wer seine Jugend auf Koppeln verbrachte und dort zu Techno und Trance abravte, der kennt die Charaktere, die HGich.T auf die Bühne knallen: das Goa-Mädchen, der zugedröhnte Dauertänzer, den abwesenden schüchternden Nerd und den zunächst unauffälligen, später total aggressiven Voll-Proll aus dem Nachbardorf.
Anna-Laura taumelt, schreit und stottert schwankend zwischen Selbstzweifeln und unkontrollierten Aggressionsschüben hin und her. Jedoch werden wir nicht Zeugen eines Schauspiels, das Drama um Anna-Laura ist kein Theater - es ist ein sich-selbst-gefährdendes Outing, eine Selbstentblößung der besonderen Art. Anna-Lauras Kampf um Aufmerksamkeit, seine Abscheu vor der Gesellschaft hat Faust´sche Züge. Allerdings ist hier der neue Proll im Fokus, nicht jemand aus der bürgerlichen Mitte oder gar der Oberschicht. In Anna-Lauras Alltagslyrik findet man Referenzpunkte zwischen RTL-geschultem Reality-Soap-Dilemma und gnadenloser gesellschaftlicher Zustandsdiagnose. Sicher dreht Goethe sich im Grabe um, würde man hier behaupten, die Sprach-Wahl sei vergleichbar. Aber dennoch hat Anna-Laura mit einigen gleichen Dingen zu kämpfen wie des Deutschen berühmteste Bühnenfigur: Die bisherige Lebensbilanz ein einziges niederschmetterndes Fazit, bei HGich.T Arbeitslosigkeit (Harz four), bei Goethe der zweifelnde Gelehrte. Beiden Gemeinsam die Verzweiflung und die Sehnsucht nach Grenzüberschreitung. Des einen Mestopheles, des anderen Tripmeister Eder. Auf Droge kommen sie beide: Faust und Anna-Laura. Nur sehen die Räusche anders aus: Tutenchamun vollzieht die Tranceformation der Gewalt. Das Goa-Mädchen tanzt durchs Publikum und die gebräunte Frau im Skianzug malt auf die Leinwände. Das doppelte Gretchen? Die einen Zuschauer sehen Phalli, die anderen Schwänze - je nach Bildungsgrad und Wohlwollen. Wir werden Zeuge von Drogenexzessen, Polizeirazzien und einem gewalttätigen Vater. In der Darstellung dessen wird niemand geschont: kein Zuschauer, kein Performer kriegt hier eine Samthandschuh-Behandlung. Durch dieses Leben, diesen Höllentrip müssen wir gemeinsam durch. Das schaffen nicht alle bis zum Schluss. Auch Anna-Laura verlässt nach einer Schlägerei mit Tutenchamun die Bühne. Die Show geht weiter, der Rave ist noch lange nicht zu Ende. Die Nebelwand steht wie aus Beton im Raum, völlig isoliert irgendwo die Performer. „Künstlerschweine“ ertönt. Die Frau im Skianzug hört auf, mit den Bauklötzchen zu spielen und ergreift das Mikro. „Künstlerschweine, Künstlerschweine, ja ich breche euch die Beine, Künstlerschweine, Künstlerschweine, ich grab euch euer Grab heut Nacht noch“. Gretchen wehrt sich! Es reicht, das wäre so ein schönes Ende. Aber es wäre nicht der Radikal-Humor der HGich.Ts würden sie nicht doch noch weitermachen. Zu schön, um aufzuhören! Ein verstörendes Nachspiel muß her! Dafür sorgt Mark, der vorher eifrig auf der Bühne die Flüchtigkeit der Performance medial archiviert und drauf los knipst, was die Digitalkamera hergibt. Nun legt er die Kamera weg und versucht sich in einer misslungenen Boris-Becker-Imitation.
HGich.T lassen den Zeitgeist aus der Flasche und dekonstruieren munter das Theater. Mehr als eine Million You-Tube Klicks. Im Zuschauerraum neben verstörten Sinnsuchern eine handvoll junger Fans, die jeden Satz auswendig kennen - und breitwillig mitmachen. Bei allem, was da kommt.

Von Mein-Kopf-hat-ein-Gehirn-Sprechchören bis hin zur Raucher-Polonaise wird freudig und lustvoll mitperformt. Es finden sich auch jedes Mal Freiwillige, die sich eine Ohrfeige einfangen möchten. Ein uralter Theatertrick, der überraschenderweise immer noch hartgesottene Kritiker reinfallen lässt. Eifrige Theatergänger, die das beliebte Mit-Mach-Theater der Gießener Schule verinnerlicht haben, werden hier vor den Kopf gestoßen: selbst wenn man mitmachen möchte, weiß man nicht wie. Man bleibt seltsam außen vor, es gibt keine Identifikationsfigur, niemanden, der uns durch den Dschungel der Bezüge führt. Es bleibt jedem Zuschauer selbst überlassen, wohin er schaut und was er tut. Mit Artaud im Kopf und Boal im Rücken wendet sich HGich.T gegen einen Katharsis-Begriff, der lähmend auf soziale Impulse wirkt. Dem Zuschauer wird kein All-Inclusive-Moral-Paket mitgeliefert, um nach dem Theaterkonsum ungestört in sein „privates Biedermeier*(1)“ zurückkehren zu können, sondern vor der Performance ist während der Performance ist nach der Performance - und die Ohrwürmer nimmt man frei nach Haus.
Austausch der Referenzsysteme: Kenntnisse der Boulevard-Themen, RTL-Shows, Goa-Kultur und beispielsweise der ersten akustischen Grindcore-Band „Happy Grindcore“ dienen des besseren und tieferen Verständnisses von HGich.Ts Schocktheater mehr, als grundlegende Einblicke in das ABC des postdramatischen Theaters. Man weiß nicht, ob man HGich.T gar die Lektüre von Artauds „Theater der Grausamkeit“ unterstellen darf. Aber gewisse ähnliche Ansätze kann man nicht leugnen: das Fehlen der logischen Handlung, das Unvorhersehbare, die Verweigerung der Illustration, der Glaube an Anarchie als Darstellungsform auf der Bühne, Sinn durch Chaos. Kurz: Theater im Dienste einer neuen Daseinsform. Einer Daseinsform voller Chaos, Negation und dem schweren Duft der Anarchie. Text, Sprache, Bewegung, Performer bilden keine suggestive Einheit, das Spektakel der Inszenierung steht im Mittelpunkt. Anna-Lauras Brachial-Lyrik verballhornt unsere Konsumkultur, unsere Privat-Fernseh-Mentalität und rebelliert gegen unsere Zivilisation.
Theater und kein Double: HGich.T bringen keine Realität auf die Bühne, sie erschaffen eine Realität für sich - eine Verdoppelung der Wirklichkeit des Theaters im Artaud´schen Sinne. Die Grenze zwischen ästhetischem Wert und Unwert des inszenierten Geschehens ist nicht mehr nachvollziehbar. Der Alltag verliert seinen Realitätsanspruch. Einzig Anna-Laura könnte jetzt noch helfen, statt dessen bleiben wir mit einer Horde Performer uns selbst überlassen im Publikum zurück. Mark, alias Boris Becker, räumt das Feld, der Nebel ist immer noch eine undurchsichtbare Wand, das Goa-Mädchen verbeugt sich zum wiederholten Male und fordert Applaus. Tutenchamun taucht wieder auf. Er gibt eine Vollplaybacknummer zum Besten. Dann ist auch er weg - ebenso das Schwarzlicht. Goa-Wunderland wird fahl und grau. Der Nebel bleibt. Zu wahr, um schön zu sein.
